Congratulations in the direction of Salmonguy for profitable this year's Halos Heaven myth baseball league. Salmonguy carried out the year a whooping 55 game titles forward of moment desired destination finisher erstadsayshesgotit. The Northwesterners and Hamilton's Demons rounded out the ultimate 4. Already for some Halolinks:I choose total duty for Garrett Richards' terrible start off Shohei Ohtani Jersey. I've experienced terrible luck with pitchers I streamed (yeah, yeah...no one particular cares), still I strategy Richards would be alternate. Nope: Sports preserve rolling, battle Angels 10-5 - Yahoo Athletics. "Garrett Richards (7-7) gave up 8 hits and 7 operates When failing towards consider out of the 5th inning inside of his worst get started considering the fact that becoming a member of the Angels' rotation comprehensive-period within just late July. The immediately-hander bought rocked inside his supreme dwelling audition for a rotation place within 2014, furnishing up the highest operates he includes permitted inside 12 starts off getting Joe Blanton's vacation spot."By natural means, he wasn't transforming the batter's eye-point nor trusting his things: Oakland Sports activities at Los Angeles Angels - September 23, 2013 - MLB.com. "It's component of a understanding curve," supervisor Mike Scioscia explained https://www.laagear.com/gerardo-reyes-jersey. "It's aspect of a person starting to be his initially likelihood Kurt Suzuki Jersey. I believe that if oneself seem at something that Garrett's accomplished mainly because he acquired back again within just the rotation, oneself include in direction of be psyched more than the advancements he's built inside of knowing his ability, and tonight's a single we are relocating towards change the web site upon."Tonight's activity attributes these types of 2 gentlemen: Sports-Angels Preview - Yahoo Sports activities. "Griffin was a 4-1 loser inside his very last pay a visit to in the direction of Anaheim upon July 19, offering up 4 operates and 3 homers in just 5 innings. The specifically-hander experienced received his 2 past video games there, yielding 1 work previously mentioned 16 innings. The Angels will yet again counter Griffin with Jason Vargas (8-7, 4.28), who permitted 4 operates and 2 homers inside of 6 innings Wednesday."This is intriguing: Research: Angels need to have compare who'll pitch within just toward assistance transform aspects in close proximity to upcoming time - latimes.com. "A workers molded further more within Scioscia's picture Great pitching, protection, situational hitting and competitive baserunning includes completed substantially much better of late. Within just their 29 game titles in advance of Monday, the Angels experienced an AL-primary 2.99 all round Generation and 2.04 bullpen Generation, moment-easiest inside of the majors. They have been averaging 5.2 operates for every sport inside September." Hence what i obtain in opposition to this little bit is; the Angels are successful previously due to the fact they're having optimistic pitching. Even so, Scioscia believes it contains additional towards do with a option style of offense: "We're pitching effectively with great situational hitting, very good baserunning and potent security. That equation provides up towards successful," Scioscia claimed. "Early, we ended up intended in the vicinity of batter's box offense, and any time that struggles, it will become a single-dimensional. That's everything we require in the direction of choose a wider visual appearance at." He mentions a few variables that incorporate far better ensuing inside of their latest achievement, but 2 of them incorporate almost nothing in direction of do with hitting. It wasn't the worthless "batter's box offense" that triggered the Angels toward falter maximum of this time, it was the terrible pitching (I'm wanting at oneself Joe Blanton), lousy security, AND lousy performances versus Pujols and Hamilton. Listed here's an case in point: Oakland Sports activities at Los Angeles Angels - September 24, 2013 - MLB.com. "Considerably of Oakland's results the final 2 seasons stems versus its pitching employees. The rotation is operating effectively this thirty day period, as the starters consist of authorized 2 acquired operates or a lot less within just the closing 16 video games."Recall the past shortstop the Halos transformed toward 3rd foundation? season games remaining, the Milwaukee Brewers (90-67) have opened up a three game edge for the top Wild Card spot on the St. Louis Cardinals (87-70) as they get set for game two of their three game series. The Crew also leads the Rockies by 3.5 games and their magic number over either team is down to three. A win tonight will make things very difficult for the Cards to catch the Brewers, and it’s important because the Rockies seem heck-bent on not losing any more.PLUS, Milwaukee is only 1 https://www.fanmb.com/alec-bettinger-jersey.5 games behind the Chicago Cubs for the NL Central division lead. That is a worthy goal, for various and sundry reasons https://www.fanmb.com/greg-vaughn-jersey. Brewer fans are Pirate fans for the next two days, and as they whupped up on Milwaukee for much of the season it is only fair that they do the same to the Northside Nine https://www.fanmb.com/josh-hader-jersey.No need for an opener tonight, as lefty Gio Gonzalez goes for Milwaukee. Gio is 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA as a Brewer. Austin Gomber starts for St. Louis, and he’s a proven winner (6-1) with a 3.53 ERA. Gomber is a lefty, too! Coincidence? announced the firing of manager Ozzie Guillen, officially making him the fall guy for last season's 69-93 season. With the search for a new manager underway, we've perhaps gotten a glimpse into the front office's decision-making process https://www.mmfanstore.com/jeff-brigham-jersey, and it's not necessarily good news.Case in point: managerial candidate Larry Bowa, during a chat with Chris Russo on "SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio," (you can read the Palm Beach Post's full transcript here) described how his official interview with team owner Jeffrey Loria went. One statement particularly stood out to me.Russo: "Are you optimistic that something could happen there?"Bowa: "You know what, Chris, you know how that goes. When you get interviewed you don’t know. You know, you think you did good, maybe you didn’t do good. I thought it was a good interview. We made some good points with each other."Russo: "That team could use a little feistiness from you."Bowa: (laughs) "Yeah, that was one of the issues that was brought up."Russo: "They asked you how you are going to approach this team that underachieved, is that what they basically said?"Bowa: "Well, no, they didn’t say underachieved. They said, are you gonna be, we need some intensity out there and we need some guys to play better than they played https://www.mmfanstore.com/t-shirts."If you've seen any glimpse of a Marlins game or checked a box score over the past year, chances are the phrase "they didn't say underachieved" was one that caught your attention immediately. As a refresher, here's the Merriam-Webster definition of the word "underachieve," or "underachiever" as it's listed sans one small change:one (as a student player/team) that fails to attain a predicted level of achievement or does not do as well as expectedThere are obviously a litany of words that could describe the Miami Marlins' season in 2012, several of which are inappropriate to use in this post, but "underachieve" is certainly one of them. For a team that began the season with players like Josh Johnson, Omar Infante, Giancarlo Stanton, Anibal Sanchez, Jose Reyes, and Mark Buehrle on the roster, 93 losses certainly qualify as some level of disappointment. You may not have thought that the Marlins were a team ready to take the NL East division crown, but there were very few people who could have predicted just how bad the Fish were last season. And as petty as this may be to point out, if this is truly how the Marlins' front office is viewing the failures of the 2012 season, it'll be a long time before they're able to implement the "winning culture" Larry Beinfest has been talking about since Guillen's departure. Perhaps Bowa was just being politically correct (which is entirely understandable) during the interview, but if the Miami brass believes that a sprinkle of intensity is the solution to the problem, the task of making this ballclub relevant again will be that much more difficult. On a side note, saying "we need some intensity out there" after having Ozzie Guillen as your manager further drives home the point that Ozzie's fate was pretty much a foregone conclusion https://www.mmfanstore.com/lewin-diaz-jersey. "Ozzie Guillen angry" on Google returns 509,000 results. The offseason is still young and the Fish have already rid themselves of two of the biggest sources of headaches from the 2012 squad in Guillen and Heath Bell, but it's imperative that the organizational plan moving forward stresses honest evaluation and understands when "underachievement" does in fact fit the situation.P.S. - For any of our East Coast readers out there, I hope you've been staying (and continue to stay) safe during Hurricane Sandy. Y'all are in my thoughts this week.

Birdland!Last night’s win was pretty great, right? The Orioles starter got through five innings. The offense didn’t look completely impotent. Cedric Mullins got back on track. And the bullpen was great! Plus, they wrapped up the win in a speedy two hours and 32 minutes. It wasn’t perfect, of course. The Orioles lineup went silent in the final four frames, and Trey Mancini’s 0-for-4, four strikeout performance was particularly concerning. But let’s stick with the positives. This is only the team’s second win in that last eight games. There will be plenty of time for dragging them later on.Perhaps the biggest takeaway was that Jorge López looked incredible Reggie Jackson Jersey. Yes, he did give up two home runs in the fifth inning, so the questions about his ability to get through a lineup multiple times remain. But look at those first four innings. He had the best velocity of his career, touching 97 for the duration of the night. And his command was fully locked in. He entered the game with doubts about whether he could handle a starter’s role. At the very least, he earned himself another turn in the rotation.Every week that goes by where the O’s can continue to rely on the same starting rotation that began the year, the better. The organization seems interested in letting the likes of Zac Lowther, Mike Baumann, and Alex Wells face Triple-A lineups a few times before pushing them to the big leagues. With the minor league season not starting until May, that will require López and his peers to hang on for a while longer.LinksKremer starts Saturday, Hays nearing return and more | School of RochThe starter for today was TBD until Friday afternoon, but giving Dean Kremer the ball makes sense. He will be on short rest, but he only threw 54 pitches in his last outing and should be fresh enough. Even still, this feels like a game where Tyler Wells or Wade LeBlanc could make an early appearance.13 Orioles observations for 13 games, from a rough start at the plate to bright spots on the mound | The Baltimore SunThe Orioles have had a weird opening two weeks to the season. It’s not too surprising that the bullpen has been rather good. There were always enough quality arms there to make it work. But the extreme struggles of the lineup are weird, and it’s coming from all of the players that were expected to have massive impact. You would have to think that, eventually, that will change.Observations on Orioles’ hitting and starting pitching through first 2 weeks | BaltimoreBaseball.comIf the Orioles end the season with the .429 winning percentage that they currently have, that likely means they had a pretty successful season. That would put them right near the 70-win mark. That said, there is a lot of baseball left to be played.Austin Hays’ pending return means Brandon Hyde will have fully stocked Orioles outfield for first time | The Baltimore SunThis is a good problem to have https://www.baltimoregearshop.com/scott-erickson-jersey. Brandon Hyde isn’t going to be able to get Mullins, Hays, DJ Stewart, Ryan Mountcastle, and Anthony Santander into the lineup at the same time. There aren’t enough positions to go around. laptop screen is attempting to inform me that today is April 27, 2020. That’s most likely the case, though time has seemingly ceased to function in its normal capacity for...well, for the same reason I cannot firmly explain how long it has been.If that date is true, however, it means that we’ve officially crossed the 1-month mark of lost baseball, as Opening Day was originally set for March 26 prior to the onset of COVID-19 and the havoc it has wreaked on our society since that time. And while the concept of baseball teams doing baseball things competitively still seems unimaginably far off Barry Larkin Jersey, that hasn’t precluded Major League Baseball from doing diligent work to make sure the season will, in fact, commence in some form or fashion at some point this summer. In a wide-ranging, all-encompassing update on the state of affairs over at ESPN, Jeff Passan highlights each of the pertinent considerations MLB and the MLBPA must make in order to get the season going at some juncture down the road, and it’s well worth a read if you’ve got 10 minutes and any remaining interest in the game https://www.crfanshop.com/bobby-tolan-jersey. From location, pay, season structure, postseason structure, rosters, fans, the minors, etc., it’s touched on at least a bit here, giving some insight into what baseball might look like when it finally returns to us.As Passan emphasizes, baseball will happen in 2020. It’s just a matter of...well, of every detail. So, we’ve got that going for us...which is nice.In other news, the Cincinnati Reds will feature prominently on MLB Network tomorrow (Tuesday). As MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon relayed, you’ll get doses of the Nasty Boys, peak Barry Larkin, and Homer Bailey’s second no-no, among other things. Just be glad most of you are in the Eastern Time Zone, since programming begins early.Over the weekend, the Cape Cod Baseball League officially announced that their 2020 season is kaput, and that’s quite unfortunate. The CCBL is a wood-bat summer league, one that has consistently been a proving ground for college players as they begin turning heads of MLB scouts. You might remember that current Reds outfielder Phil Ervin was once named league MVP there, helping propel the Samford star’s status into being an eventual 1st round draftee. It doesn’t really matter what topic Joe Posnanski chooses to write about, as it’s going to end up a must-read. So, I will link to his latest from The Athletic and tell you nothing about it.Finally, in lieu of not being able to head to the ballpark and hear everybody clap your hands clapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclap, just read this story while it gets stuck in your head in a less traditional way https://www.crfanshop.com/tyler-stephenson-jersey.

acquired right-handed pitcher Johnny Cueto and cash considerations from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for left-handed pitchers Brandon Finnegan Salvador Perez Jersey, John Lamb and Cody Reed. The addition of Cueto will help strengthen a Royals team that is leading the AL Central and hoping to contend in the postseason. There had been questions regarding Cueto's health Nicky Lopez Jersey, and his struggles had sparked debate regarding the effect his value -- altered or otherwise -- would have on the deadline. However, in what was potentially his last start in a Reds uniform -- factoring in he would be traded before July 30 -- Cueto went eight innings strong against the Rockies, allowing just four hits and a walk Jakob Junis Jersey, striking out five and not allowing a run.Cueto had been linked to a several teams, including the Blue Jays and Orioles, though interest had been preliminary -- essentially due diligence. The Yankees and Dodgers had also sent scouts to his July 19 interleague start against the Indians. There had been rumors that the Royals would be pushing hard to get Cueto as early as July 18. And on July 25 following Cueto's start, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported that the Royals were "close to acquiring Cueto" but the "deal fell through." And according to SB Nation's Chris Cotillo, the deal came so close that the Reds had righty Michael Lorenzen warming up in the bullpen in case the team had to pull Cueto. The health concerns stem primarily from stiffness experienced in Cueto's pitching elbow on multiple occasions this year. An MRI done on his elbow on Tuesday, May 26 showed no structural damage, and Cueto missed just the one start on May 31. He also had the same stiffness in mid-June and had a start pushed back, but since his initial missed start, Cueto has posted a 2.20 ERA in 10 starts. The Reds, who sit in fourth place in the NL Central, get three young southpaws to help their rebuilding efforts. The 25-year-old Finnegan has a 3-0 record and 2.96 ERA in a relief role this season, while Lamb and Reed are currently in the minors.★★★SB Nation presents: Reds manager's April tirade set to 'Hey Jude'

kind of season he’s having, but it was Aroldis Chapman who was hanging his head after tonight’s game. The Yankees went to the ninth in complete control, up 5-3, and Chapman came in for a save opportunity. He had one of the worst outings of his career, giving up four runs on two home runs without recording a single out as the Twins salvaged a game from the Yankees Aaron Judge Jersey, 7-5.Josh Donaldson took Chapman deep to tie the game after a leadoff single in the ninth inning. The game had felt too close all night, but with the Yankees’ vaunted bullpen, and especially their closer, you still felt OK until Donaldson’s ball left the yard. Willians Astudillo singled, and then ageless wonder Nelson Cruz hit a ball high and deep into the Minneapolis night Zack Britton Jersey. It was the third time Chapman surrendered two home runs in an inning, the first since facing these Twins, in Minnesota, back in 2016.I said in the game thread that J.A. Happ was lucky to be running as low a home run rate as he was, given how much more contact he’s allowing and how his stuff has declined. Sure enough, we didn’t have to wait long for the Yankees to jack that HR/9 average a little bit.Giancarlo Stanton took him deep to center in the first inning, a three-run bomb to give the Yankees an early lead. It was Stanton’s third long ball of the series, a much-needed resurgence of power in a lineup that’s lacked it entirely too much this season:Stanton continues to crush 'em pic.twitter.com/nrOL3EzHe8— New York Yankees June 11, 2021Happ also gave up a home run to Gio Urshela a couple of innings later, as well as a triple to the Yankee third baseman, getting the two hardest parts of the cycle out of the way early. Outside of the two long balls, you could argue the team was a little feckless offensively — plenty of traffic but without the tack-on runs early that can make games laughers. And this is, in fact, the importance of the home run. Without Stanton and Urshela going yard, the first two-thirds of this game would have been miserable, with the Yankees getting on base in every single inning and not having a big hit to cash them in. Instead, with the home runs, this game was one that was probably too close to comfort, but still a lead, rather than one where we all spent our night tearing our hair out.Michael King was pretty sloppy. He threw 24 pitches in the first, allowing a walk, a hit, and a sac fly to get the Twins on the board https://www.nyygear.com/whitey-ford-jersey. King also tossed 21 pitches in the third, and overall, he struggled with deception on his fastballs, generating just a single swing and miss against the two-seam, zero on the four seam, and two on the cutter. The right-hander relies on all three pitches to work east-west around the plate, and indeed, boasts some of the best horizontal movement in baseball. Now, King was able to get ten called strikes on the sinker, albeit none on his other two fastballs, showing that he was at least able to command that pitch. Overall, he walked three, the same number of strikeouts recorded, and didn’t get out of the fourth inning, making it tough to give him a passing grade on the night.Jonathan Loiasiga pitched spectacularly in relief of King, and Chad Green pitched well in his relief outing too. The big play that came from Green’s work, though, was a brilliant throw from sometime outfielder Miguel Andújar:Dú not run on Miggy. pic.twitter.com/gPqxcPmWQP— New York Yankees June 11, 2021Andújar has had his share of adventures in left, but this isn’t the first time we’ve seen his arm make up for lesser range or instincts in the outfield. If he can hit and play like that in the outfield, he’ll get all the chances in the world to succeed. Speaking of hitting, he reached base three times today. Most of this game was pretty positive! The Yankees definitely could have tacked on a few more runs — Happ wasn’t sharp, the team got tonnes of traffic, and five runs probably feels like less than they should have managed. Still, they gave a lead to their all-world closer — a multiple-run lead at that — and despite entering action on Thursday with a 0.39 ERA, Chapman couldn’t deliver. That’s baseball, as they say.The Yankees will take Friday off and hope to rebound Saturday from Philadelphia, taking on the Phillies at 1:05pm Eastern. Jameson Taillon will face Vince Velasquez.Box Score

the Milwaukee Brewers announced the acquisition of reliever Jeremy Jeffress and subsequently designated Kirk Nieuwenhuis for assignment. Jeffress won’t arrive in time to be active for tonight’s game however, leaving the Brewers with an open roster spot. That translates to just a 35 wRC+, though Brinson has slugged a couple of homers, stolen a base, and made some pretty spectacular plays in the outfield.Stearns and co. were reportedly unwilling to part with Brinson in a package for Sonny Gray this summer, but apparently don’t believe that he’s ready for regular playing time against big league pitching. At the very least, we can expect him to return to the big leagues when rosters expand in September https://www.laagear.com/kurt-suzuki-jersey.Statistics courtesy of Fangraphs

coming off one of the low points of the season on Tuesday when they saw their second-best pitcher go down with an injury and only mustered two hits against the Braves, got an injection of positive vibes early Wednesday when Marcus Stroman was revealed to have a clean MRI. Those good vibes were even further boosted by the return of Michael Conforto to the lineup that evening. Still, there was reason to be wary about the game, as Tylor Megill was making the first start of his career and the team without many relievers available in the bullpen. It seemed like a nearly impossible game for the Mets to pitch their way through.Except Megill made it work. He took the hill and, while he wasn’t spectacular, the effort he put forth was nothing short of admirable. He held the Braves scoreless for the first four innings, only allowing two soft singles to Freddie Freeman across those four frames.Meanwhile, the impact of Conforto’s return to the lineup was felt instantly. After Francisco Lindor walked in the first inning, Conforto came up behind him and instantly ripped a double to right field in his first at bat back to put two runners in scoring position for the Mets with only one out. The Mets didn’t get another hit in the inning, but because of Conforto’s double, Lindor was able to score on a wild pitch, and then Conforto scored on a groundout two batters later. The Mets led 2-0 going to the second, and they didn’t stop there. The Mets had struggled to put together crooked numbers for a full week but had just put one up in the first inning, and were primed to do it again in the second against a struggling Kyle Wright. Luis Guillorme doubled off the wall in left field, and two batters later, Jeff McNeil singled him home. Then Lindor followed by ripping one into the seats in right field for his ninth homer of the season https://www.nymgear.com/khalil-lee-jersey. The Mets were up 5-0 at that point and riding high. They rode that lead into the fifth inning, with Megill still out there. Up over 75 pitches and starting to labor, he surrendered a walk and then a two-run blast to Ender Inciarte into the Coca-Cola Corner. He then walked the pitcher and had to be taken out, but he finished with a respectable 4.1 innings pitched in his debut with the two runs allows, 4 punchouts, 2 walks, and 3 hits given up. All in all, it’s about the best the Mets could’ve hoped for.Miguel Castro came on in relief and labored a bit himself trying to get through that fifth, loading the bases with two outs in the process. But he induced a groundout by Abraham Almonte to get through the inning without allowing anything further. In a surprising development, Corey Oswalt, freshly called up today as well, came in for the 6th inning. He instantly gave up a double to Austin Riley, then threw a wild pitch and surrendered infield single to score a run and make it 5-3. It looked like the Oswalt Mets fans had been seeing for years, and the lead the Mets were enjoying appeared to be imminent jeopardy. But Oswalt settled down and got through the sixth without allowing another baserunner.Mets fans could exhale, as Oswalt navigated through his inning, and now it was on to the better relievers for the rest of the game to face the top of the Braves’ lineup. Unfortunately, none of them were available. Not even Seth Lugo.So we got a second inning of Corey Oswalt, this time against the top of the lineup. And it went...fine! He gave up a hit to Freeman—who had four hits and a walk in the game, because he had gone too long without annoying the Mets—though he was erased and replaced on a fielder’s choice by Ozzie Albies, who got picked off to end the inning. In a near miracle, the Mets had gotten two innings out of Oswalt—whom, you may remember, was outrighted off the 40-man roster over the winter and had gone unclaimed, and been hurt for much of the season—and lived to tell about it. The Mets had even finally added another run in the seventh on a James McCann RBI single to extend the lead to 6-3. Now it was time to hand it off to the better pitchers with an even larger cushion. Except Oswalt came out for a third inning.Yes, Luis Rojas was so desperate for pitching that he tried to nurse Oswalt through 3 innings of relief to nurse a small lead. And it almost worked. Oswalt struck out the first hitter of the eighth, but then allowed another double to Riley and walked Ehire Adrianza. Rojas finally made the move to pull his laboring pitcher and hand it straight to Edwin Díaz for a five-out save.Díaz extricated himself from the jam in the eighth by striking out Pablo Sandoval and getting Ender Inciarte to fly out. The Mets tacked on another run in the top of the 9th on a Lindor RBI single to make it 7-3. Díaz came back out for the ninth and, despite not having his best stuff, sealed the game. There are many losses that are tough-luck losses, but you can consider this a dumb-luck win. The fact that the Mets got 6.2 innings out of Megill and Oswalt and they both only allowed three runs while Díaz and Castro did the rest is one of the most ridiculous outcomes in a season that has had a bunch of ridiculous things happen to the Mets so far. The offense also looked miles ahead of where it was 24 hours ago, with the team putting together 13 hits and 7 runs in their best offensive performance in a while. McNeil, Lindor, and Conforto all combined for 7 hits. The Mets have their hitters back. And they’re still 4 games up in the NL East New York Mets T-shirts. They have the day off on Thursday, before welcoming the Phillies for a four game series, including yet another doubleheader on Friday. The 2021 season is only a week old. It’s too soon to get excited or worried about anything in particular that has happened. We don’t have enough data to establish trends one way or another. But that doesn’t make the Orioles current performance against the Yankees any less disappointing. It’s been a pretty bad showing all-around from the O’s during their time in the Bronx. The offense has scored two total runs, both coming on one swing from Rio Ruiz. Although that was shrouded in good news since it seems that the Orioles are, in fact, allowed to hit home runs. Ruiz was the first member of the team to leave the park this season. That said, the pitching has not been good either. Both Jorge Lopez and Dean Kremer struggled with control and seemed to run out of gas sometime during their second time through the Yankees order https://www.baltimoregearshop.com/tyler-wilson-jersey. The Orioles won’t be expecting many of their starters to toss seven shutout innings like John Means did on Opening Day, but they will need them to cut down on walks and get through five innings with some regularity. Again, there are no trends yet. Kremer will be better in his next start. Hitters like Trey Mancini, Anthony Santander Rich Dauer Jersey, and Ryan Mountcastle won’t stay homer-less all season long. Plus, Means is on the bump tonight, and although he may not be a universally-regarded “ace” just yet Keegan Akin Jersey, it sure feels a lot better when he’s pitching.Links & NotesOrioles home opener to include first pitch from Mayor Brandon Scott; Mo Gaba, front-line workers to be recognized | The Baltimore SunAs bad as the O’s have looked the last two days, you can be excited that tonight’s game is the end of a road trip, and we get to see the team back at Camden Yards tomorrow. It will be neat to see fans back in the stands at the friendly confines.2020-21 MLB International Reviews: Baltimore Orioles | Baseball AmericaThings are looking up internationally for the O’s. This most recent class of signings was an improvement over Mike Elias’s debut class in 2019, and the next class should be better than that as the current Orioles regime establishes a foothold in the region. The development of the training facility in the Dominican Republic can only help.Strikeouts mount as O’s lose again to Yankees | Steve MelewskiThere have been a lot of Orioles strikeouts in this first week of the season. However, they have also just gone from a frigid few days in Boston to facing the Yankees, where it looked like Jordan Montgomery had everything working and Gerrit Cole is...well, he’s Gerrit Cole. Of course, if the trend continues against all types of pitchers, concerns will mount.Ryan McKenna made it to the majors. Now the Orioles’ outfield prospect wants to stick around. | The Baltimore SunThe Orioles outfield is full of options these days, and that is despite Austin Hays and DJ Stewart sitting on the shelf with matching hamstring injuries. Ryan McKenna looks to have plenty of athleticism to be a useful player on this Orioles team. It’s just a matter of whether he will get enough playing time to show it off. If not, he may be better served to put in work at the alternate site or Norfolk until a bigger role opens up.Orioles birthdaysIs it your birthday? Happy birthday! Ricky Bones turns 52 today. The right-handed pitcher appeared in 30 games for the 1999 Orioles and finished with a 5.98 ERA.The late Tom Phoebus (d. 2019) was born on this day in 1942. The Baltimore native spent five seasons with the hometown team from 1966 through 1970. He pitched to a 3.06 ERA, 107 ERA+, and 6.0 bWAR over those five seasons.Orioles history1873 - John McGraw is born. Although he was never a part of the organization that we currently know as the Baltimore Orioles, McGraw did play third base for the 1890s Orioles before becoming a successful manager of the New York Giants, winning 10 NL titles and three World Series championships. McGraw was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1937.

Star of the GameNick Castellanos hit a 2-run homer rather hard in Thursday’s Opening Day contest against the St. Louis Cardinals, part of a multi-hit day that helped power the Cincinnati Reds offense in a game they ultimately lost. His offensive game kept right on clicking on Saturday, too, as he came to the plate twice and managed to score both times. That’s, uh, burying the lede a bit on my part. While Nick singled and scored his first trip to the plate, he took a fastball to the left arm when in the box the second time, and it sure didn’t look like a pitch that had slipped. After taking exception to it a bit, he offered the ball back to pitcher Jake Woodford, and after his teammates moved him around the diamond to 3B, he raced home and scored on a head-first slide that just beat a diving Woodford to the plate. Then came the flex that Reds fans won’t soon forget, as Bally Sports Cincinnati relayed:The Reds' and Cardinals' dugouts have emptied after Nick Castellanos scores on a wild pitch. pic.twitter.com/M8sSctUjbo— Bally Sports Cincinnati April 3, 2021Benches cleared, tensions flared, and the Reds/Cardinals rivalry instantly had a shot in its arm that may well require a second dose in four weeks. Anyway, Nick Castellanos might not have been the face of the Reds four hours ago, but he pretty well made that leap today in a drama-packed win for the Reds. Honorable Mentions are due to: a lot of Reds, including Tucker Barnhart for socking a dinger, Tyler Mahle for a rock-solid outing (5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 K); Jonathan India for doing absolutely everything; Aristides Aquino for bonking a homer; and Tyler Naquin for ribbying https://www.crfanshop.com/mike-moustakas-jersey, walking, and taking a plunk.Key PlaysMahle left a meatball over the plate to Paul DeJong in the Top of the 2nd, and DeJong deposited said meatball in the LF seats for a solo homer. Reds trailed, 1-0.The Reds finally got a lead in 2021 in the Bottom of the 3rd. Naquin coaxed a leadoff walk off Adam Wainwright, and Barnhart followed with a 2-run Tuck Job into the seats in right-center. Later, both Jesse Winker and Nick Castellanos poked singles, each moved up a bag on a Barry Larkin Approved Productive Out [TM] by Joey Votto, and that proved large when back to back dinked singles by Eugenio Suarez and Mike Moustakas each drove in additional runs. The BABIP Gods kept right on smiling with Jonathan India’s infield single down the 3B line to load the bases Riley O'Brien Jersey, and Naquin followed with a 2-run single to keep the pile-on rolling and chase Wainwright to an early shower. Reds led, 6-1.DeJong sauced another Mahle meatball in the Top of the 4th, though it was once again fortunately just of the solo variety. Reds led, 6-2.Nick Castellanos was plunked by an inside heater from Jake Woodford in the Bottom of the 4th, and his reaction to it was rather entertaining to behold. A Votto single and Suarez walk later loaded the bases, and a wild pitch led to Castellanos flying home and sliding in under the tag/tackle. Castellanos flexed on Woodford, chaos ensued, the benches cleared at least twice, it’s still a damn pandemic with one MLB in quarantine with games postponed, and did I mention chaos ensued? Anyway, Castellanos ended up ejected and Woodford eventually was back on the mound to walk Moose to re-load the bases, and he hit India with a breaking ball on the elbow to drive in another Reds run. Reds led, 8-2, after an inning I’m sure both sides will quickly forget and move on from Shogo Akiyama Jersey.Mahle’s day ended on a laser of a single into LF from Nolan Arenado that led off the Top of the 6th, and Cam Bedrosian came on to relieve him. A walk followed, but what would’ve been the final out of the inning ended up kicking off the glove of Aristides Aquino in LF for an error, a ball he dropped while fighting a vicious sun at that time of the day. Arenado scored, and the Reds held an 8-3 lead.Aquino got that run right back, though, blasting an Andrew Miller meatwad way the heck over the LF wall, a laser that flew off the bat at an absurd 112 mph. Reds led, 9-3.Cionel Perez was electric for a time on the mound, but he exited with 1-out in the Top of the 8th after allowing a walk and a single. Sean Doolittle came on to clean up the damage, but after a walk to Yadier Molina loaded the bases, a Dylan Carlson flyout to RF allowed DeJong to tag and score. That would-be rally ended there, however, and the Reds held a 9-4 lead.Sal Romano was given the task of wrapping things in the 9th, and that admittedly came against the heart of the Cardinals order. That didn’t go so well, as Romano walked Paul Goldschmidt before Arenado smacked a 2-run tater into the LF seats to make it 9-6. That, though is how this eventful game would finally end.Tony GraphaninoSource: FanGraphsOther NotesSomehow, Nick Castellanos was the only player ejected after the 4th inning fracas, which is completely ridiculous.Jay Bruce is no longer on the Cincinnati Reds, but today marked his 34th birthday. He chipped in with a snazzy defensive play at 1B for the New York Yankees and even added a 2-ribbie single. Happy birthday, Jay!The Reds got at least one hit from every spot in the order except 9th on the day.Tomorrow will see the Reds and Cardinals wrap their series, and it’ll mark the official Reds debut of righty Jeff Hoffman. He’ll be countered by veteran righty Carlos Martinez of St. Louis, with first pitch set for 1:10 PM ET.Tunes.

Royals put on a patented performance in Game 2 of the World Series on Wednesday night in a 7-1 victory over the New York Mets, taking a two games to none lead in the best-of-seven Fall Classic.Kansas City rallied for four runs in the fifth inning, a frame that saw Jacob deGrom finally crack after 3½ starts of brilliance so far this postseason. A walk and five singles turned a one-run deficit into a three-run lead for the Royals, who improved to 7-1 at Kauffman Stadium in Kasas City this postseason. The big blow came from Eric Hosmer, whose two-run single broke a 1-1 tie. Hosmer, who delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly in Tuesday night's marathon Game 1, was 2-for-4 on the night, and has driven in four runs and reached base four times in the first two games of the series. It was a total team effort on offense for the Royals, who got two hits, including a triple, from shortstop Alcides Escobar, who drove in two and now has 20 hits in 13 postseason games this year. Mike Moustakas added two hits and a walk, and Alex Gordon doubled and walked twice. The Royals put the game away with three more runs in the eighth inning, giving them a commanding series lead. How important is a 2-0 lead in the World Series?FYI with KC holding a late lead: 53 teams have gone up 2-0 in the World Series, and 42 of those won it (79.2%), including the last nine.— Royals Gameday October 29, 20153 reasons the Royals are up 2-0Cueto was CUETO again. The Royals traded for Johnny Cueto in late July at the non-waiver trade deadline to be the ace they needed, but in his two months with Kansas City he was a rather ordinary 4-7 with a 4.76 ERA in 13 regular season starts. But in the postseason he has been a tale of two pitchers. In his one road start, Cueto allowed eight runs in two innings in Game 3 of the ALCS against the Blue Jays. But in three home starts, Cueto has a 2.74 ERA in three starts, including a complete game in Game 2 on Wednesday night.Cueto struck out four and allowed one run on two hits and three walks. He retired 15 batters in a row until a two-out walk in the ninth. He was the first Royals pitcher to throw a complete game in the postseason since Bret Saberhagen in Game 7 of the 1985 World Series Jarrod Dyson Jersey.Cueto has lasted at least eight innings in each of his last two home starts, also closing out the Astros in Game 5 of the ALDS. He is the only Royals pitcher in the last two postseasons to pitch into the eighth inning, and he has done it twice. His next scheduled start would be Game 6, at home. If the series gets that far.Wearing down deGrom. Mets Game 2 starter deGrom has been fantastic this postseason, entering Wednesday with three wins in three starts to go with 27 strikeouts and just five walks in 20 innings, and a 1.80 ERA. He allowed five hits, six hits and four hits in his three previous playoff starts. All three of those were on the road, which game deGrom a chance at a record on Wednesday night:No pitcher in baseball history has won four road games in one postseason. Jacob deGrom has that chance tonight.— Peter Botte October 29, 2015The Royals had five hits in the fifth inning alone on Wednesday night Steve Balboni Jersey, when deGrom was missing over the heart of the plate repeatedly. The 34-pitch frame ended his night, and his chance at the record. The big inning. That fateful fifth inning was just the latest long rally for a relentless Royals lineup this postseason. In 13 games this postseason, the Royals have scored at least three runs in an inning 10 times, and have scored multiple runs in an inning 18 times. All that has added up to 75 runs in 13 games for the Royals, an average of 5.77 runs per game on offense https://www.kcrgear.com/frank-white-jersey. That has the Royals two wins away from their first World Series title since 1985.The World Series shifts to New York with a travel day on Thursday, followed by Game 3 from Citi Field on Friday night, with Yordano Ventura starting for the Royals and Noah Syndergaard for the Mets.

the Yankees outfield was supposed to be a strength. Clint Frazier had a fantastic breakout campaign in 2020, slashing .267/.394/.511 with 8 homers in 39 games, finally putting that prodigious bat speed to good use. Meanwhile, Aaron Hicks posted a 120 OPS+ despite having limited power, thanks to his immense walk rate that gave him a .379 OBP; a year removed from Tommy John surgery, nobody would have been surprised if his power returned in a big way https://www.nyygear.com/clint-frazier-jersey. And then, of course, there’s Aaron Judge, whose only concern was whether he would be able to stay on the field. There were concerns all around, certainly, but there was also immense reason for optimism.Judge has, so far, remained healthy, but literally nothing else has gone well. Hicks struggled to the tune of a 74 OPS+ before undergoing season-ending surgery in May to repair a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist. Frazier similarly struggled, lost the starting left field job to Miguel Andújar, and then hit the injured list with possible vertigo and vision issues. Vertigo was at least ruled out recently, but given his concussion history, it’s not far-fetched to wonder if his season, and even his career, could be in jeopardy.Andújar, for his part, has put together some good stretches, but the lows have put him at a .667OPS (83 OPS+) for the year, he’s been a bit of an adventure in left field — and did I mention he’s on the injured list, too? Brett Gardner, re-signed to be a fourth outfielder, looks lost at the plate half the time, and the recently-acquired Tim Locastro’s career 78 OPS+ is probably not the answer, either.Enter Joey Gallo. The two-time All-Star outfielder is the biggest piece of trade bait that the last-place Texas Rangers have available to cast, and boy, would he look good in pinstripes. This is Gallo’s hit chart for the 2021 season, superimposed on the outline of Yankee Stadium’s dimensions. According to Statcast, he would have four more home runs this season were he playing in the Bronx and not Globe Life Field in Arlington, and judging from the graphic, there are at least two other hits that would come close. Additionally, his left-handed swing is tailor-made for Yankee Stadium — he pulls the ball 40 percent of the time, and all but 8 of those hypothetical 28 home runs would go to right field. The biggest knock against Gallo is that he strikes out too much. Frankly, I don’t care — when you’re pace for 40 homers and are working walks slightly more than 20 percent of the time (the most in the league), even a 30-percent strikeout rate won’t matter. How do I know that? Because that’s exactly what Gallo is doing this year, and he’s slashing .239/.402/.522, good for a 153 wRC+. That figure ranks eighth-best in baseball and better than anybody on the Yankees — even Judge! But let’s pretend for a second that I did care about the punchouts. Well, as Josh noted in his breakdown of the Rangers as a potential trade partner Oswald Peraza Jersey, Gallo is walking at a career-high rate and striking out at a career-low rate. Even better, he’s chasing only 19.8 percent of the time, in the league’s 91st percentile. In short, his plate discipline — which has typically been a point of Gallo criticism — has been an immense strength for him this season.Even better, Gallo has absolutely exploded since the first foreign substance memo went out on June 3rd. Before that date, he posted a .208/.358/.383 slash (111 wRC+) with a 34.1-percent strikeout rate and 17.7-percent walk rate, in addition to mashing only nine long balls and accruing 1.1 WAR. Since that date? Gallo has slashed .301/.480/.796 (231 wRC+) while homered once every other game; moreover, his strikeout percentage dropped to 24.8 percent and his walk rate increased to 25.6 percent — in other words, in the last month, this strikeout-prone batter has walked more than he’s struck out!Defensively, the 2020 Gold Glove winner is one of the best in the league, and his 5 Outs Above Average this season are tied with seven others for sixth in the rankings. He’s exclusively played right field this season, but he not only has experience in both left and center, he’s succeeded there — he’s been about league-average at both positions according to OAA, Defensive Runs Saved, and UZR/150. And the Yankees could conceivably use him at either position — like I mentioned above, the team has glaring holes at both spots. As Gallo is under contract for the 2022 season, Gallo is going to cost a lot — probably more than Brian Cashman is willing to part with, if we’re being honest. It’s also worth noting that there’s no guarantee that Texas is even going to want to trade him; they may instead lock him up for a long time https://www.nyygear.com/andy-pettitte-jersey. If he is truly available, however, then the Yankees need to go all-in. Whether or not he’d be enough to propel the Yankees to a playoff spot this year is up for debate, but as a move with 2022 in mind, there’s arguably no one better on the market this July.
